What are tongue and groove wall panels?
Tongue and Groove Wall Panels are machined MDF sheets with a butted edge and a half groove detail at each joint, so neighbouring sheets butt together and the matching half grooves form a continuous V-joint across the wall.
Choosing a thickness and sheet size
9mm sheets are the lightest option and suit dado-height runs where the panelling meets a rail. 12mm is our most popular all-round choice for full-height hallway and bedroom walls — it resists knocks and takes a screw fixing well. 18mm is specified where the panelling doubles as a substrate for shelving, hooks or heavy wall fixings.
Sheet sizes are cut to your wall so you minimise joints. If you send us a plan or simple sketch of the wall we will advise on the most efficient cutting layout and reduce waste.
Where tongue and groove panelling works best
Hallways benefit most: dado-height T&G takes the wear from bags, buggies and coats while lifting a plain corridor. Downstairs cloakrooms, utility rooms and cottage bedrooms are equally natural homes for it.
Interior designers and landlords use it to add character to new-build rooms with flat plasterboard walls, and holiday-let owners specify it because it survives turnover cleaning far better than wallpaper.
How to fit tongue and groove MDF panelling
Fit the first sheet to a plumb line, then butt the next sheet against it so the half groove on each edge meets and forms a continuous V-joint. On plasterboard use grab adhesive plus a few pins into studs; on masonry, batten out at 400mm centres first.
Scribe the final sheet to the corner, then finish with skirting, a dado rail or a shadow-gap trim. The matching half grooves hide the sheet-to-sheet seam, giving a continuous board line across the whole wall, even on runs of five or six metres.

Every sheet is machined to order at our Northampton workshop on a CNC router, then hand-finished and quality checked before it leaves the bench. Standard lead time is 5–10 working days, rising to around three weeks in peak season or for bespoke sizes.
We deliver nationwide across England, Scotland and Wales. Small orders travel by tracked courier, full sheet orders travel on a pallet with a tail-lift vehicle, and time-critical or oversized orders can go out on our own vehicle or by same-day courier. Collection from Northampton is free and usually available the day your order is finished.

Frequently asked questions
What thickness of tongue and groove panelling should I choose?
12mm suits most walls. Choose 9mm for lightweight dado-height panelling and 18mm where you plan to hang shelves, radiators or heavy mirrors on the panelled surface.
Can you cut tongue and groove panels to my exact wall size?
Yes. Send your wall dimensions and we will machine sheets to suit, including scribed heights for sloping ceilings and cut-outs for sockets and switches.
Can tongue and groove MDF panelling be used in a bathroom?
Yes, provided you specify a moisture resistant (MR) grade, seal every cut edge and keep the panels away from direct splash zones. In a shower enclosure use tiling or a wet-wall board instead.
Do I need to paint tongue and groove MDF panels?
Primed and raw MDF finishes must be painted. Use an MDF primer, lightly denib, then two coats of eggshell or satin. Black dyed sheets are coloured through the board and only need a clear protective coat if you want extra durability.
Care and maintenance
- Dust with a soft dry cloth; avoid soaking the MDF core.
- Wipe marks with a barely damp cloth and dry immediately.
- Touch up chips with filler and re-coat with the same paint system.
- Seal all cut edges before decorating to stop moisture wicking in.
