What are fire rated tongue and groove wall panels?
Fire Rated Tongue and Groove Wall Panels are machined MDF sheets with a butted edge and a half groove detail at each joint, so neighbouring sheets butt together and the matching half grooves form a continuous V-joint across the wall.
Where fire rated panelling is required
Escape corridors, stairwells, HMO communal areas, hotels, schools, care homes and licensed premises commonly require Euroclass B-s1,d0 wall linings. Domestic hallways that form part of a protected escape route can also fall under the requirement.
If you are unsure, ask your building control officer or fire risk assessor for the classification required, then send it to us — we will confirm the correct board grade before we machine anything.
Finishing FR MDF without losing the rating
The fire performance comes from the board itself, but heavy coatings can affect the tested system. Use a compatible, thin-build primer and an emulsion or eggshell topcoat rather than thick textured finishes, and keep records of the products used for your handover file.
How to fit tongue and groove MDF panelling
Fit the first sheet to a plumb line, then butt the next sheet against it so the half groove on each edge meets and forms a continuous V-joint. On plasterboard use grab adhesive plus a few pins into studs; on masonry, batten out at 400mm centres first.
Scribe the final sheet to the corner, then finish with skirting, a dado rail or a shadow-gap trim. The matching half grooves hide the sheet-to-sheet seam, giving a continuous board line across the whole wall, even on runs of five or six metres.

Every sheet is machined to order at our Northampton workshop on a CNC router, then hand-finished and quality checked before it leaves the bench. Standard lead time is 5–10 working days, rising to around three weeks in peak season or for bespoke sizes.
We deliver nationwide across England, Scotland and Wales. Small orders travel by tracked courier, full sheet orders travel on a pallet with a tail-lift vehicle, and time-critical or oversized orders can go out on our own vehicle or by same-day courier. Frequently asked questions
What fire rating do these panels achieve?
The FR MDF we machine is manufactured to Euroclass B-s1,d0 in the tested thicknesses. We supply the board manufacturer's declaration of performance with commercial orders on request.
Is fire rated MDF also moisture resistant?
Not by default. FR and MR are separate grades. If you need both — for example a hotel bathroom corridor — tell us and we will quote a combined FR/MR board.
Can tongue and groove MDF panelling be used in a bathroom?
Yes, provided you specify a moisture resistant (MR) grade, seal every cut edge and keep the panels away from direct splash zones. In a shower enclosure use tiling or a wet-wall board instead.
Do I need to paint tongue and groove MDF panels?
Primed and raw MDF finishes must be painted. Use an MDF primer, lightly denib, then two coats of eggshell or satin. Black dyed sheets are coloured through the board and only need a clear protective coat if you want extra durability.
Care and maintenance
- Dust with a soft dry cloth; avoid soaking the MDF core.
- Wipe marks with a barely damp cloth and dry immediately.
- Touch up chips with filler and re-coat with the same paint system.
- Seal all cut edges before decorating to stop moisture wicking in.
