What are black butt and bead wall panels?
Black Butt and Bead Wall Panels are MDF sheets routed with a repeating bead detail between flat board faces, giving the crisp Georgian panelling look without building individual boards on site.
A crisp bead in a dark finish
Dark paint usually flattens fine mouldings because the brush loads up in the profile. Dyed board avoids that entirely — the bead keeps its machined sharpness and the shadow line stays legible even in a very dark room.
This makes black butt and bead a favourite for dining rooms, snugs, cocktail bars and boutique hotel corridors where the detail needs to survive low lighting.
Lighting a black panelled wall
Use grazing light — wall washers or picture lights close to the surface — rather than flat downlights. Raking light across a bead profile is what makes the panelling read from across the room.
Fitting butt and bead panelling on site
Set out from the most visible corner so the bead spacing stays consistent across the wall. Sheets butt tightly against each other and the machined bead at the sheet edge conceals the join, so plan your cuts to land on a bead rather than mid-board.
Adhesive plus pins into studs or battens is enough on plasterboard. Fill pin holes, caulk the perimeter, then prime the cut edges before your topcoat.
- Sheet-based — far faster than fitting individual beaded boards
- Bead detail disguises the butt joint between sheets
- Works full height or under a dado rail

Frequently asked questions
Is the black finish matt or gloss?
As supplied it is a deep matt. Apply a clear satin or gloss lacquer if you want more sheen and a wipeable surface.
Can I paint over black dyed MDF later?
Yes, but you will need a stain-blocking primer to stop the dark colour bleeding through a lighter topcoat.
What is the difference between butt and bead and beaded tongue and groove?
Butt and bead sheets butt together and rely on the machined bead to hide the joint. Beaded tongue and groove uses a butted edge with a half groove detail at each joint, so the two half grooves form a full V between sheets. Visually they are close; butt and bead is quicker to set out on long walls.
How high should butt and bead panelling go?
Dado height at roughly 1000–1200mm suits hallways and dining rooms. Three-quarter height at around 1500mm works well in bedrooms, and full height suits high-ceilinged period rooms.
Care and maintenance
- Vacuum the bead grooves with a soft brush head to stop dust building up.
- Clean painted surfaces with a damp cloth and a mild detergent, never a scouring pad.
- Re-caulk perimeter joints if hairline cracks appear after the first heating season.
- Repaint high-traffic hallway runs every few years to keep the bead crisp.
Product details from our workshop
Butt and bead wall panels made to order in Northampton: Black Butt and Bead Wall Panels are machined on our CNC routers and delivered across England, Scotland and Wales. Each sheet is machined with a butted edge and a bead detail at every joint, giving the crisp, formal Georgian bead line associated with traditional panelled rooms. Manufactured from black through-dyed MDF, available in sheet sizes of 2400 x 600, 2400 x 400, 1200 x 600, 1200 x 400, thicknesses of 10mm, 12mm, 19mm.
The colour runs right through the board, so routed beads and cut edges stay black without spray finishing or edge banding.
Supplied unfinished so cut edges can be left raw or sealed and painted to suit. Ideal for dark, dramatic living rooms, dining rooms and staircase feature walls. Every sheet is CNC-machined, hand-checked and batch-matched so long wall runs line through correctly.
