What are black ribbed wall panels?
Black Ribbed Wall Panels are MDF sheets machined with raised square-edged ribs at a consistent pitch, giving a crisp, architectural line-and-shadow finish for contemporary interiors.
Maximum contrast, minimum effort
A square rib in black produces the strongest shadow line of any panel we make. Because the board is dyed rather than painted, the rib edges stay razor-sharp — paint build-up on an arris always softens it slightly.
For photographers, retailers and hospitality operators this is a fast way to get a high-impact backdrop without a decorating programme.
Handling and finishing black board
Dyed board shows dust and fingerprints more readily than a painted surface during installation. Handle with clean gloves, and give the finished wall a wipe with a dry microfibre cloth. A clear lacquer helps in high-touch areas.
Setting out ribbed panelling
Ribbed panels reward careful set-out: start from the focal point of the wall and work outward so full ribs land where the eye goes first. Fix with adhesive and pins to studs, or to a battened frame on solid walls.
Keep the rib pitch continuous across sheet joints. Ribbed sheets also make excellent bed headboards and bar fronts, where the sharp shadow line reads strongly under downlighting.
- Square-edged ribs for a sharp shadow line
- Consistent pitch across sheets for uninterrupted runs
- Popular for media walls, headboards and commercial fit-outs
Manufacturing and delivery for black ribbed wall panels

Frequently asked questions
Do black ribbed panels mark easily?
Fingerprints can show on a matt dyed surface during installation but wipe off with a dry cloth. In high-traffic areas a clear satin lacquer makes cleaning easier.
Can I use black ribbed panels on furniture?
Yes — they are frequently used for bar fronts, reception desks and wardrobe doors, where black cut edges are a real advantage.
What is the difference between ribbed and slat wall panels?
Ribbed panels are machined from a single MDF sheet with shallow raised ribs. Slat panels use taller, more widely spaced slats with a deeper gap, giving a stronger three-dimensional effect.
Can ribbed panelling be fitted horizontally?
Yes. Horizontal ribs visually widen a narrow room and work well behind low-line media units. Choose the horizontal orientation option when ordering so we machine the sheet accordingly.
Care and maintenance
- Wipe along the rib direction with a soft cloth to avoid catching edges.
- Vacuum the rib valleys occasionally with a brush attachment.
- Repaint contact areas such as bar fronts with a hard-wearing eggshell.
- Seal cut ends immediately after trimming.
Product details from our workshop
Ribbed MDF panels made to order in Northampton: Black Ribbed Wall Panels are machined on our CNC routers and delivered across England, Scotland and Wales. Narrow, closely pitched ribs are routed across the face of each sheet for a fine, contemporary texture that reads well in both daylight and downlighting. Manufactured from black through-dyed MDF, available in sheet sizes of 2400 x 575, 2400 x 400, 1200 x 575, 800 x 400 and thicknesses of 12mm, 19mm.
The colour runs right through the board, so routed ribs and cut edges stay black without spray finishing or edge banding.
Supplied unfinished so cut edges can be left raw or sealed and painted to suit. Ideal for media walls, hotel and office receptions, headboard walls and commercial interiors. Every sheet is CNC-machined, hand-checked and batch-matched so long wall runs line through correctly.
