Black Fluted Wall Panels in Through-Dyed Black MDF

Black fluted panelling is one of the hardest looks to achieve with paint and one of the easiest to achieve with dyed board. Every flute is black to the core, so the deep shadow line stays clean without a single brush stroke.

What are black fluted wall panels?

Black Fluted Wall Panels are MDF sheets machined with deep, rounded vertical flutes that cast a soft repeating shadow line, used to add texture and height to feature walls, media units and reception areas.

Why painting flutes black rarely works

A rounded flute holds paint in the base of the channel. Roller coverage is uneven, brush marks show up along the curve, and any later scuff exposes a pale MDF core. Through-dyed board sidesteps all three problems.

For contractors this also removes two days of drying time from the programme, which is why dyed board is increasingly specified for fast-track commercial fit-outs.

Black fluting in commercial spaces

Bar fronts, reception desks, restaurant booth backs and retail changing rooms all use black fluting to create depth without colour. Under warm accent lighting the flutes produce a graduated glow that flat black paint cannot match.

Fitting fluted MDF panels

Fluted sheets can run vertically for height or horizontally to widen a room. Fix with grab adhesive and pins on plasterboard, or batten out first on uneven masonry so the flutes stay perfectly straight.

Where two sheets meet, align the flute spacing across the joint so the rhythm never breaks. Finish external corners with a mitred cut or a slim trim, and seal the machined faces before painting.

  • Deep rounded flutes for strong shadow definition
  • Vertical or horizontal orientation available
  • Ideal for media walls, headboards and reception desks

Manufacturing and delivery for black fluted wall panels

Frequently asked questions

Do black fluted panels need a lacquer?

Not structurally. A clear matt or satin lacquer is worth adding on surfaces people touch — bar fronts, desks and door faces — to make them wipeable.

Will the flutes look grey rather than black?

No. The dye penetrates the full board thickness, so the machined flute face is the same depth of colour as the sheet face.

Are fluted panels hard to keep clean?

No. The flutes are rounded rather than square, so dust does not settle in a sharp corner. A monthly pass with a vacuum brush head is enough in most rooms.

Can fluted MDF be used on a curved wall?

Thin fluted sheets will follow a gentle curve when fixed to a curved batten frame. For tight radii we recommend narrow cut-to-size strips — send us the radius and we will machine to suit.

Care and maintenance

  • Dust the flute channels with a soft brush or vacuum brush head.
  • Clean painted flutes with a damp cloth; never let water pool in the channel.
  • Use a small artist's brush for touch-ups so the flute profile stays sharp.
  • Prime and paint all cut edges to protect the exposed MDF core.

Product details from our workshop

Fluted MDF panels made to order in Northampton: Black Fluted Wall Panels are machined on our CNC routers and delivered across England, Scotland and Wales. Deep, evenly spaced vertical flutes are routed into the face of every sheet, casting soft shadow lines that add depth and rhythm to a feature wall. Manufactured from black through-dyed MDF, available in sheet sizes of 2400 x 600, 2400 x 400, 1200 x 600, 1200 x 400 and thicknesses of 9mm, 19mm.

The colour runs right through the board, so routed flutes and cut edges stay black without spray finishing or edge banding.

Supplied unfinished so cut edges can be left raw or sealed and painted to suit. Ideal for bedroom feature walls, media walls, bars, reception areas and retail fit-outs. Every sheet is CNC-machined, hand-checked and batch-matched so long wall runs line through correctly.
