Paintable Slat Wall Panels in Primed-Ready MDF
Paintable slat panels give you the three-dimensional slat look in a board you can finish in any colour. Unlike pre-finished timber slats, they let you match an existing paint scheme exactly — or go deliberately bold.

What are paintable slat wall panels?
Paintable Slat Wall Panels are MDF sheets machined with tall, widely spaced slats and a deep recessed gap, producing a strong three-dimensional rhythm on feature walls, media units and partitions.
Colour control that veneer cannot offer
Wood veneer slats lock you into a timber tone. A paintable MDF slat panel lets you specify the exact colour from any paint range, then repaint years later when the scheme changes. For rental properties and commercial spaces that flexibility is worth a great deal.
Painting the recess a darker shade than the slat faces is the single most effective trick with this product — it deepens the shadow and makes a 12mm profile look substantially thicker.
Practical uses beyond the feature wall
Paintable slats are widely used for room dividers, radiator covers, bed headboards, staircase balustrade infill and shop fitting. Because they are MDF they cut and fix with ordinary site tools.
Fitting slat wall panels
Slat sheets are typically fixed to a batten frame so the deep recess reads properly and cables can be run behind. Screw through the recess between slats and fill the head, or use adhesive plus concealed pins.
Paint the recess a darker tone than the slat faces to exaggerate depth — a common trick in showrooms and media walls. Trim the last slat to suit the wall width rather than leaving a narrow sliver.
- Deep recess for a pronounced three-dimensional effect
- Batten-fixed, so services can run behind the panel
- Suits media walls, partitions, headboards and retail fit-outs

Frequently asked questions
What paint should I use on MDF slat panels?
Use an MDF or acrylic primer first, denib lightly, then finish with two coats of matt or eggshell. Spraying gives the cleanest result in the recesses; a small roller plus a brush works well by hand.
Can slat panels be fitted without battens?
On a flat, sound plasterboard wall you can bond directly with grab adhesive. Battens are still preferred where you want a cable void or the wall is uneven.
Do slat wall panels need battens?
Battens are recommended. They guarantee a flat plane on uneven walls, create a service void for TV cables, and give a solid fixing every 400mm.
What colour should I paint slat panelling?
Deep greens, clays and off-blacks show the shadow gaps best. Painting the recess one or two shades darker than the slat faces adds noticeable depth.
Care and maintenance
- Dust the slat faces and recesses with a long-pile duster or vacuum brush.
- Use a damp cloth on painted slats, drying straight away.
- Touch in knocks on slat edges promptly to keep the MDF sealed.
- Avoid installing in unheated, damp outbuildings.
