What are fire rated slat wall panels?

Fire Rated Slat Wall Panels are MDF sheets machined with tall, widely spaced slats and a deep recessed gap, producing a strong three-dimensional rhythm on feature walls, media units and partitions.

Slat panelling in HMOs and student accommodation

Communal lounges, corridors and lobbies in HMOs and student blocks are prime candidates for slat panelling: it is hard-wearing, easy to repaint between tenancies and visually upgrades a plain space. FR grade makes it viable where a licence or fire risk assessment demands rated linings.

It is also a common specification in offices and gyms, where a fire strategy typically requires Euroclass B linings in circulation routes.

Repairs and repainting over time

Because the panels are paintable, damaged slats can be filled and recoated rather than replaced. Keep two or three spare sheets from the original batch so a full panel swap is possible if a slat is broken.

Fitting slat wall panels

Slat sheets are typically fixed to a batten frame so the deep recess reads properly and cables can be run behind. Screw through the recess between slats and fill the head, or use adhesive plus concealed pins.

Paint the recess a darker tone than the slat faces to exaggerate depth — a common trick in showrooms and media walls. Trim the last slat to suit the wall width rather than leaving a narrow sliver.

  • Deep recess for a pronounced three-dimensional effect
  • Batten-fixed, so services can run behind the panel
  • Suits media walls, partitions, headboards and retail fit-outs

Manufacturing and delivery for fire rated slat wall panels

Every sheet is machined to order at our Northampton workshop on a CNC router, then hand-finished and quality checked before it leaves the bench. Standard lead time is 5–10 working days, rising to around three weeks in peak season or for bespoke sizes.

Frequently asked questions

Are fire rated slat panels paintable?

Yes. Use a thin-build primer and standard emulsion or eggshell rather than heavy textured coatings, and keep a record of the coatings used for your fire documentation.

Do you supply matching spare sheets?

We can add spares to your order so you have batch-matched material for future repairs. Just ask when placing the order.

Do slat wall panels need battens?

Battens are recommended. They guarantee a flat plane on uneven walls, create a service void for TV cables, and give a solid fixing every 400mm.

What colour should I paint slat panelling?

Deep greens, clays and off-blacks show the shadow gaps best. Painting the recess one or two shades darker than the slat faces adds noticeable depth.

Care and maintenance

  • Dust the slat faces and recesses with a long-pile duster or vacuum brush.
  • Use a damp cloth on painted slats, drying straight away.
  • Touch in knocks on slat edges promptly to keep the MDF sealed.
  • Avoid installing in unheated, damp outbuildings.
