Barrel Oak Acoustic Slat Panels — Deep Aged Oak Finish

Barrel oak takes its name from the deep, smoky tone of aged cask timber. It is the darkest oak in our acoustic range and the most dramatic — a strong architectural finish for media walls, reception areas and studio backdrops.

What are acoustic panelling - barrel oak?

Acoustic Panelling - Barrel Oak are slatted wood panels bonded to a dense acoustic felt backing, used to reduce echo and reverberation while adding a warm, linear timber finish to a wall or ceiling.

Making a dark slat wall work

Dark slats absorb light as well as sound, so plan lighting alongside the panelling. Wall grazers, a picture light or an LED strip in a shadow gap will pull out the slat rhythm; flat ceiling downlights alone will make the wall read as a solid dark mass.

Against pale plaster, oak flooring or brushed brass, barrel oak becomes the anchor of the room rather than a background texture.

A favourite for media walls

Because the tone is close to a black television bezel, barrel oak lets a large screen disappear into the wall when it is switched off — the main reason it is specified for cinema rooms and lounge media walls.

Installing acoustic slat panels

Panels can be fixed directly to plasterboard with screws through the felt between slats, or bonded with adhesive on a flat, dry wall. Screws through the felt disappear once the slat shadow closes over them.

Cut the felt with a sharp knife and the slats with a fine-tooth blade. Butt panels together so the slat gaps stay even — the felt seam is invisible in normal light. For ceilings, always mechanically fix rather than relying on adhesive alone.

  • Reduces echo and mid-range reverberation in hard rooms
  • Fixes to walls or ceilings; trims easily to size
  • Felt backing hides fixings and softens the joint line

Frequently asked questions

Is barrel oak nearly black?

It is a deep, warm brown rather than a true black — closer to smoked oak. It reads dark from a distance but the grain is clearly visible up close.

Can I mix barrel oak with lighter finishes?

Yes. A common approach is barrel oak on the media wall and a lighter oak elsewhere, tying the two together with matching flooring or joinery.

Do acoustic slat panels actually reduce noise?

They reduce reverberation inside the room — echo, harsh reflections and call-quality problems — rather than blocking noise between rooms. Covering roughly 20–30% of the wall area gives a clearly audible improvement.

Can acoustic panels go behind a TV or radiator?

Behind a TV, yes — leave a service gap for cables. Directly above a radiator is best avoided, as the constant heat cycle can dry the slats out over time.

Care and maintenance

  • Vacuum the felt with a brush attachment every few months.
  • Wipe the slats along the grain with a dry or barely damp microfibre cloth.
  • Avoid silicone polishes — they leave a film on the lacquer.
  • Keep panels out of permanently damp rooms; they are for dry internal use.

Product details from our workshop

Acoustic slat wall panels supplied ready to fit: Acoustic Panelling - Barrel Oak is a 2400 x 525mm slatted acoustic panel delivered across England, Scotland and Wales. Wood-effect slats are bonded to an acoustic felt backing that absorbs reflected sound, softening echo in busy rooms while adding warmth and texture.

The barrel oak slats carry a warm mid-brown grain that suits darker, cosier rooms and pairs well with brass and walnut.

Supplied factory finished and ready to install — no painting required. Ideal for home offices, home cinemas, studios, meeting rooms and open-plan living spaces. Panels cut cleanly with a fine-tooth blade and fix straight to plasterboard or battens.
