What are oak veneered black dyed slat wall panels?

Oak Veneered Black Dyed Slat Wall Panels are MDF sheets machined with tall, widely spaced slats and a deep recessed gap, producing a strong three-dimensional rhythm on feature walls, media units and partitions.

Why the black core matters

On a standard veneered slat panel the recess is the same pale colour as the board, which flattens the profile. Dyeing the core black turns the gap into a true shadow line, so the oak slats read as separate elements rather than as a grooved sheet.

It is the closest look to a hand-built oak slat screen, achieved from a single machined sheet.

Where designers use it

Reception walls, hotel corridors, luxury bedrooms and high-end media walls. It also works as a room divider when fixed to a slim frame, because both the oak face and the black recess look deliberate from either angle.

Fitting slat wall panels

Slat sheets are typically fixed to a batten frame so the deep recess reads properly and cables can be run behind. Screw through the recess between slats and fill the head, or use adhesive plus concealed pins.

Paint the recess a darker tone than the slat faces to exaggerate depth — a common trick in showrooms and media walls. Trim the last slat to suit the wall width rather than leaving a narrow sliver.

  • Deep recess for a pronounced three-dimensional effect
  • Batten-fixed, so services can run behind the panel
  • Suits media walls, partitions, headboards and retail fit-outs

Frequently asked questions

Is the oak a real veneer or a printed finish?

It is real oak veneer, so the grain varies naturally from sheet to sheet and can be finished with a clear oil or lacquer.

Does this panel have acoustic performance?

No — it is a decorative MDF panel. For sound absorption choose our felt-backed acoustic slat range instead.

Do slat wall panels need battens?

Battens are recommended. They guarantee a flat plane on uneven walls, create a service void for TV cables, and give a solid fixing every 400mm.

What colour should I paint slat panelling?

Deep greens, clays and off-blacks show the shadow gaps best. Painting the recess one or two shades darker than the slat faces adds noticeable depth.

Care and maintenance

  • Dust the slat faces and recesses with a long-pile duster or vacuum brush.
  • Use a damp cloth on painted slats, drying straight away.
  • Touch in knocks on slat edges promptly to keep the MDF sealed.
  • Avoid installing in unheated, damp outbuildings.

Product details from our workshop

Slat wall panels made to order in Northampton: Oak Veneered Black Dyed Slat Wall Panels are machined on our CNC routers and delivered across England, Scotland and Wales. Wide slats with clean square shadow gaps are routed into each sheet, giving the modern slatted wall look without fixing dozens of individual battens. Built on a black through-dyed MDF core with a real oak veneered face, available in sheet sizes of 2400 x 585, 2400 x 390, 1200 x 585, 800 x 585 and thicknesses of 10mm, 19mm.

The oak veneer gives a genuine timber grain across the slat faces, while the through-dyed core keeps shadow gaps and cut edges black.

Supplied unfinished so the veneer can be oiled, lacquered or left raw to suit the scheme. Ideal for living room feature walls, home offices, restaurants and showroom interiors. Every sheet is CNC-machined, hand-checked and batch-matched so long wall runs line through correctly.
